carbon neutral showers

Back in the office today after a week or so at the Glastonbury festival building the carbon neutral showers for Greenpeace. The showers are powered by an Okofen wood chip boiler, using pelets from managed forestry so the carbon goes round and round, rather than from an ancient hole in the ground back into the atmosphere.

Since Greenpeace are targeting rain forest destruction in a big way this year, that was chosen as the theme for their field. Having visited the Amazon jungle back in 2007, I came up with the idea of making the showers represent the flooded forest by creating a reflective ‘infinity pool’, surrounded by foliage to give the impression of being in a rain forest space. Water cascaded over the edge of the pool and was caught in a trough to then be pumped back round. The resultant space was green and tranquil – we even had jungle sounds being piped in through some hidden speakers, a real break from the heat and chaos of the rest of the festival.
