Infusion therapy suites inspired by First Class travel, for the Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre in Lisbon.
The key driver for the design brief came from the Vice President of the Foundation, Mr Botelho, who was clear that the patient is the most important person in the room and should be treated as such. He looked at other approaches to personal comfort, believing it was important to innovate by stepping outside the medical world for inspiration.
The vision was to merge the latest thinking in aviation First Class cabin design, with the complex requirements of an infusion seat, essentially somewhere a patient would typically spend up to three hours seated, with a companion, whilst receiving infusion therapy.

We optimised the suites design by placing the patient at the centre of our thinking, with the goal to make the space feel as far removed from a hospital space as possible, while ensuring all the features required by the nursing staff are easy to use.
The design developed to submerge all the technology inside a calm but luxurious interior, the beautifully made shell wrapping an invisible and protective arm around the shoulder of both the patient and their companion. Calming lighting and the best possible materials create a sense of security and luxury that reassures patients as they are receiving their treatment. The suite has many experience improvements including built in storage and wardrobe for patient belongings, better layout, improved control of the space and enhanced privacy.
The first 24 units were installed in time for the new building’s inauguration attended by, amongst many others, the King and Queen of Spain and President of Portugal.
